Mobile Social Ventures | June 11

How to make “social” sound interesting to business people? It often sounds like “government” or “NGO” or “Socially Responsible”. Indeed, combining private enterprise with universal service and economic development seems a difficult equation to solve.

Keeping this in mind, ‘Social ventures‘ are businesses aiming at both healthy profitability and social contribution. Numerous examples from have appeared globally, the most famous example in the telecom world being Grameen Telecom in Bangladesh, founded by Nobel Peace Prize 2006 Mohammad Yunus.

In many developing countries, mobile is playing a role able to support economic development in rural areas or to reach less fortunate populations and provide them with a much-needed communication infrastructure and services useful for their daily life and business, from farming to various types of production and services.

This atypical session titled ‘Mobile Social Ventures‘ is co-organized with the Social Venture Forum and will aim at being a mind-opener for telecom players, entrepreneurs, government policy makers, mobile VAS providers, NGOs, etc.
